Why travelers stop here
Danggogae Martyrs' Shrine is located on a small hill just a 5-minute walk from Yongsan Electronics Market. It is a shrine that produced nine saints and one blessed martyr, where ten male and female Catholics were martyred in 1839 at the end of the Gihae Persecution. They were originally scheduled to be executed at the intersection outside Seosomun Gate, but merchants there requested the execution site be moved due to the Lunar New Year market, so they were transferred to Danggogae, where the execution was carried out, enshrining the martyrs.
Danggogae Martyrs' Shrine was created under the theme 'The Pain of the Wild Rose, the Fragrance of the Plum Blossom,' expressing the suffering of persecution through the thorns of the wild rose and God's grace through the fragrance of the plum blossom. The 14 Stations of the Cross at Danggogae Shrine are composed of Blessed Lee Seong-rye Maria following the path of Jesus, allowing visitors to experience both the path of suffering and the glory of martyrdom.
