Garumaemae Village is located in Jipyeong-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, an area historically known as Uihyang (Righteousness Village). During the late Joseon Dynasty, in the year Eulmi (1895), it was the first place in the nation to raise a righteous army against Japanese aggression, sparking a nationwide movement. The village is scattered across four valleys along the ridges of Chilbosan Mountain, forming hamlets called Sokgogae Village, Buil Village, Sail Village, and Garumaemae Village. Chilbosan Mountain, now with a closed mine, once produced silver, copper, tin, and other minerals, and its name derives from the seven types of gems found there. The name Garume originally came from the village layout resembling the beams and rafters of a house along the ridge of Chilbosan. However, due to the scattered hamlets and the character 'me' in Garume meaning 'to grind,' which was thought to harm unity, the name was changed to Garumaemae when the experience village was established, using the character 'mae' meaning 'plum blossom,' symbolizing the hamlets gathering together like a part in hair.
