Deoksugung Daehanmun

서울특별시 중구 세종대로 99 (정동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Daehanmun (大漢門) is the main gate of Deoksugung Palace, where 'Daehan' means 'Hanyang becomes prosperous.' Originally, the main gate of Gyeongungung Palace was Inhwamun (仁化門) located to the south, but as the area around the east gate, Daeanmun (大安門), including Wongudan, became the new city center, it took on the role of the main gate. The current name was changed in 1906 (the 10th year of Gwangmu) when the gate was repaired. Originally, Daehanmun was about 33 meters ahead, but it was moved to its current location during the expansion of Taepyeong-ro in the 1970s. The Geumcheongyo Bridge, located past Daehanmun, was excavated and restored in 1986.
