Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Bongwonsa, a thousand-year-old traditional temple, was registered as a traditional temple in 2011, and in July 2014, the Amitabha Gwaebuldo and the bronze bell were registered as tangible cultural heritage of Seoul Metropolitan City. Regular Buddhist services are held by faith groups including Gwaneumhoe, Hwaeomhoe, the choir, and Minhwahoe. Affiliated institutions include the Yeongsanjae Preservation Society, Yeongsanjae Training Institute, the Korean Buddhist Yeongsanjae Preservation Society, and Okcheon Beomeum University, a Buddhist chant education institution. Located in the city center, Bongwonsa promotes the traditional Buddhist ritual of Yeongsanjae both domestically and internationally, and through succession and development, it strives to maintain its status as the main sanctuary of traditional Buddhism and to be a place for enhancing faith in daily life.
