Gabaeryangjin Fortress

경상남도 거제시 동부면 가배리 산17-1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gabaeryangjin Fortress in Geoje was built in the 21st year of King Seongjong's reign (1490) and served as the main base of Gyeongsang Left Naval Command, which defended the western coast of South Gyeongsang Province during the early Joseon period. It was one of the seven naval garrisons of Geoje.

This area is strategically very important as it is located on the route to Geoje among the two branches of the sea route that splits toward Tongyeong and Geoje with Hansando Island in the center. It was used as the Gyeongsang Left Naval Command and the Three Provinces Naval Command from the 7th year of King Sejong's reign (1425) to the 24th year of King Seonjo's reign (1601), making it a place of great historical significance. Records indicate that during the Imjin War in the 16th year of King Seonjo's reign (1593), after Admiral Yi Sun-sin became the commander of the Three Provinces Naval Command, he established the main camp of the Three Provinces Naval Command on Hansando Island and expanded and renovated this site on a larger scale than before.
