Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gasan Seowon is a shrine enshrining the spirit tablets of Yi Je-hyeon (1287–1367), a civil official of the late Goryeo period, and Yi Hang-bok (1556–1618), a civil official and scholar of the mid-Joseon period who was the 8th-generation descendant of Yi Je-hyeon. In the 4th year of King Yeonsangun’s reign (1498), Yi Jae-in (1415–?), the 5th-generation descendant of Yi Je-hyeon and magistrate of Jangsu, built a house and retired to what is now Juksan-ri, Samgye-myeon, Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, where he enshrined a portrait of Yi Je-hyeon. In 1559, descendant Yi Dae-jeong built the shrine Baeksansa to hold ancestral rites for Yi Je-hyeon. As the shrine fell into disrepair over time, descendant Yi Eon-gyeong moved it to its current location at the southern foot of Nangwolsan Mountain (Gasan Village, Hongjeong-ri, Samseo-myeon, Jangseong-gun) in the 42nd year of King Yeongjo’s reign (1766), naming it Gasan Seowon and additionally enshrining Yi Hang-bok. It was demolished in the 5th year of King Gojong’s reign (1868) and remained as a portrait hall (yeongdang) housing only the portrait, until it was rebuilt in 1960. In 1998, upon the proposal of Jangseong Hyanggyo, Yi Jae-in was additionally enshrined, and an ancestral rite is held annually on the 10th day of the 8th lunar month. The portrait of Yi Je-hyeon is preserved here.
