Yi Chungsun's Suicide Site

Yi Chungsun's Suicide Site is where he committed suicide and died for the country while confronting Japanese troops. Patriot Yi Chungsun was from Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do. He joined the military early and was commissioned as an infantry lieutenant in July 1902. In 1905, he organized a military club and carried out a national salvation movement. In 1907, the Jeongmi Seven Treaty was signed, and subsequently, by a secret memorandum, the Korean army was forcibly disbanded. On August 1, when the garrison was suddenly disbanded, he refused this, and while fighting against the pre-dispatched Japanese troops in Gyeongseong, he was severely wounded. Facing the crisis of being captured by the Japanese, he committed suicide and avoided the disgrace of arrest. The government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Patriotic Medal) in 1990 (National Foundation Medal in 1977) in recognition of his contributions. A marker stone installed by Seoul Metropolitan Government is located in the flowerbed in front of the JoongAng Ilbo building.
