Seongbuk-dong Cathedral

서울특별시 성북구 선잠로 28 (성북동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Seongbuk-dong Cathedral was established in 1975 as a separate parish from Hyehwa-dong. The statue of the Virgin Mary standing in the middle of the yard holds a Bible instead of the baby Jesus, unlike typical statues, and her parted, chignon hairstyle is also striking. It is located in a place visible to anyone visiting Seongbuk-dong, and it is beloved to the extent that many people take photos with the beautiful architecture as a backdrop. The stained glass of the main hall depicts sacred images and stories across eight windows, including the baby Jesus lying in a manger, the Virgin Mary and Joseph in meditation, and the Magi coming with gifts to pay homage. Below the cathedral is a small Franciscan monastery, and above it is Gilsangsa Temple nearby, along with many historical sites such as embassies, museums, and art galleries from various countries.
