Why travelers stop here

Located at the foot of Wausan Mountain in Mapo-gu, Gwangheungdang is a hanok cultural space to the right of the Shrine of King Gongmin. It operates various programs to raise awareness of the value of traditional culture. Mapo-gu runs educational programs for youth and the excavation and exhibition of local historical materials. On Daeboreum (the Great Full Moon), it holds traditional Daeboreum games, kite flying, Jisinbapgi (stepping on the earth god), Seokjeon (stone battle), and Cheoksa (archery) contests, which reflect pre-modern customs and lifestyles. On Coming-of-Age Day, a traditional coming-of-age ceremony is held. Various events such as Gugak Madang (traditional Korean music festival) and Mapo Gugak Ullim performances are conducted to promote traditional Korean music. Additionally, the shrine ritual for King Gongmin has been developed into a community harmony and festival event. Paid cultural classes including Janggu (drum) class, Pansori (narrative singing), and Guksundo (traditional martial art) are offered.
