Gwanghwamun Square

서울특별시 종로구 세종대로 172

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Renovated with a new look and opened to the public, Gwanghwamun Square transforms Sejong-ro, the central street of Seoul with a 600-year history, from a vehicle-centered road into a human-centered space. It has been newly created as a space offering views of beautiful natural landscapes such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukaksan Mountain, and reborn as a historical and cultural experience space through the restoration of Yookjo Street, the old form of Sejong-ro. In the initial section, 'Square Restoring the History of Gwanghwamun,' the Woldae (stone platform) has been recreated and the Haetae statue restored. In the section around Sejong-ro Park, 'Square Reproducing the Scenery of Yookjo Street,' traces of Yookjo Street, the central street of old Hanyang, have been reproduced, and a miniature model embodying this has been installed.
