Dongsipjagak

Dongsipjagak is a guard post connected to Gwanghwamun, built at the corner where the outer wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace turns toward Geonchunmun. The stone platform is presumed to be a relic from the early Joseon period, while the pavilion itself is believed to have been constructed during the era of Heungseon Daewongun. Although small in scale, it is considered one of the outstanding buildings within Gyeongbokgung Palace due to its harmonious artistic beauty. The floor plan is square with three bays on both the front and sides, and the frame is assembled using only lower and upper crossbeams, with no walls, leaving it completely open. During the day, it is an open structure without walls, and the floor is made of earth. Dongsipjagak originally functioned as a bastion-like guard post built at the southeast corner of the palace walls, but as the palace walls were demolished, it became an independent building standing by the roadside as it is today. Seosipjagak was built at the front corners of the palace to monitor both inside and outside, but it has been demolished and can no longer be seen.
