Gajodo Island

An island located in Sadeung-myeon, Geoje-si. It covers an area of 5.82㎢ with a coastline of 19.5 km. Barley and sweet potatoes are mainly cultivated, and oyster and mussel farming is active along the coast. The name originates from the Chinese characters 加 (to add) and 助 (to help), meaning 'to assist,' and it is the second largest island among those attached to Geoje Island. Records in the Goryeosa (History of Goryeo) indicate that a horse pasture was established here during the reign of King Seongjong. Representative tourist attractions on Gajodo Island include Noeulijineun Eondeok (Sunset Hill), where beautiful sunsets can be viewed; Gyedo Fishing Village Experience Village; Jeongjanaru, a spot on the summit of Ongnyeobong Peak where a fairy is said to have danced in a cloud skirt; Suhyeop Hyosi Park near the ferry dock; and a suspension bridge connecting Gajodo Island and Hyeongjeseom (Brother Islands). In July 2000, the Gajodo Bridge connecting the southern part of the island to Seongpo-ri on Geoje Island was opened. From Changchon Village, looking west, the sunset descending between the two islands toward Goseong is a spectacular sight.
