Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Taejosan Mountain is the main guardian mountain of Cheonan, forming the watershed of Yuryangcheon Stream and Sanbangcheon Stream. From its summit, one can overlook Cheonan at a glance. It is said that the name 'Taejosan' originated from the legend that King Taejo Wang Geon of the Goryeo Dynasty trained soldiers around this mountain. Gagwonsa Temple, belonging to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, was enshrined on May 9, 1977, on the middle peak of Taejosan Mountain through the heartfelt donations of Buddhist devotees and many people, praying for the reunification of North and South Korea. The bronze seated Buddha statue, measuring 15 meters in height, 30 meters in circumference, with ears 175 cm long, fingernails 30 cm long, and weighing 60 tons of bronze, faces west with the main peak of Taejosan behind it, welcoming countless beings with a compassionate smile. To the left of the statue, the largest Daeungbojeon Hall in Korea, along with monks' quarters and other temple buildings, are systematically arranged, making it a famous prayer site for many people.
