Galma Mot (Galmoemot)

제주특별자치도 서귀포시 표선면 성읍리

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This pond is located at the entrance of Namsanbong on the roadside from Seongeup-ri intersection toward Seongsan. Administratively, it belongs to Sinpung-ri, Seongsan-eup, but it is closer to Seongeup and is owned by Seongeup-ri village. According to feng shui theory, this pond resembles a thirsty horse drinking water, and it was also used for watering horses and cattle, hence the name Galma Mot (meaning 'thirsty horse pond'). This naturally formed pond is said to never dry up even in severe droughts. In the center, a small pond is surrounded by a circular stone wall, and there is a mulpangdol (a stone used for drinking water) as evidence of past use as drinking water.

Water is presumed to flow in from the crater area of Namsanbong via a channel, and additionally, artificially constructed rainwater pipes are installed under the roadside to channel water into the pond. Part of the pond has been filled to road level, about 60㎡, for agricultural water use, and beyond that, farmland is cultivated.
