Gangdaengi Maitreya Buddha

충청남도 서산시 운산면 마애삼존불길 18-1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This Maitreya Buddha was originally located inside the former Gunjang-dong (now Gopung Reservoir) area, about 100 meters north of Gangdang Bridge at the entrance to Gangdaengi. The site was elevated, remaining like an island even now, and is easily identifiable due to overgrown grass. It was moved to its current location when the area was submerged to create the reservoir. The statue is estimated to date from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period. It measures 216 cm in height, 65 cm in shoulder width, and 25 cm in thickness. It wears a crown on its head, with the right arm raised and placed on the chest, and the left arm bent and placed on the abdomen, following the same style as other Maitreya statues in the Seosan area. According to legend, it was erected along the route used by Chinese envoys traveling to and from the West Sea, or it was a guardian statue protecting Bowonsa Temple.
