Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office

Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office is the site of buildings where central officials stayed when they came to Gangneung from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty. It was designated as a Historic Site in 1994 under the name Gangneung Imyeonggwanji, and was renamed Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office on November 27, 2014. The building site remains in good condition with diverse remains, providing valuable materials for the study of government offices since the Goryeo Dynasty. Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office, including the government office, public buildings, and guesthouses, totaled 313 kan (a unit of measurement for traditional Korean buildings) and served as the administrative center of downtown Gangneung. However, during the Japanese colonial period, most of it was damaged, except for the Imyeonggwan Sammun (National Treasure), the guesthouse gate, and Chilsadang (Gangwon-do Tangible Cultural Property). Gangneung Imyeonggwan Guesthouse Gate is the oldest existing guesthouse gate and holds great value. Currently, the Cultural Heritage Administration has decided to restore the intentionally damaged Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office by 2023, and construction is in full swing.
