Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is the birthplace of Gang Il-sun, the founder of Jeungsangyo. It was designated as a local cultural heritage of Jeongeup-si in 2021, and as of 2023, only the site remains, with the entire premises covered in grass and the boundary surrounded by a low brick wall. Gang Il-sun was born in the village below Siru Peak, in Gaengmang-ri (now Sinwol-ri Sinsong Village), Deokcheon-myeon, Jeongeup. Sinsong Village is located 300 meters before the intersection branching off to Jeongu, Sintaen, and Gobu on the road from Jeongeup to Hwangtohyeon via Deokcheon, turning left. This village is commonly known to the elderly as Sonbaraegi. Gang Il-sun was of the Jinju Gang clan, with the given name Il-sun, courtesy name Saok, and pen name Jeungsan. He was born on September 19, 1871, as the son of father Heungju and mother Kwon, at 438 Sinsong Village, Sinwol-ri, Deokcheon-myeon, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do. Jeungsan, called the progenitor of Korea's new religions, is said to have traveled across the eight provinces of Joseon until the age of 30 for ascetic practices, and attained enlightenment on July 5, 1901, at Daewonsa Temple on Moaksan Mountain. Jeungsan's religious thought, along with Choi Su-un's Donghak thought, is the beginning of Korea's modern social ideology.
