Gangjin Wolamsa Temple Site Three-Story Stone Pagoda

전라남도 강진군 성전면 월남1길 100 (성전면)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a three-story stone pagoda remaining at the site of Wolamsa Temple, featuring a three-story body placed on a single-story base. Due to its geographical location on the former territory of Baekje, this pagoda largely follows the Baekje style. Characteristics include each story of the base and body being made from separate stones, and the roof stone of the first story starting wider than the base, similar to wooden pagodas. It is considered a very important stone pagoda in the Jeolla region in terms of scale and style, incorporating the style of the representative Baekje pagoda, the Five-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site in Buyeo, elements of brick-style pagodas, and Baekje-style elements from the Goryeo period. Excavations at the Wolamsa Temple Site confirmed that it was a twin pagoda arrangement, with two pagodas placed side by side centered around the main hall. At the Wolamsa Temple Site, the Stele for National Preceptor Jingak (Treasure No. 313) also remains. Address: 100, Wolnam 1-gil, Seongjeon-myeon, Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do
