Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A rocky island (approx. 116m above sea level, area approx. 0.1㎢) located about 500m south of Galgae Village, Galgot-ri, Nambu-myeon, Geoje-si. Haegeumgang, where two islands meet, belongs to Hallyeohaesang National Park and was designated as a Scenic Site in 1971. It is more widely called Haegeumgang, meaning 'Geumgangsan of the sea', rather than Galdo (Arrowroot Island), named after its terrain resembling arrowroot roots spreading downward. This island, with an elevation of 116m and an area of about 0.1㎢, was also called Yakchosom (Herb Island) because it was so abundant in medicinal herbs that the inscription 'Seobulgwacha' was carved, referring to Seobul of China's Qin Shi Huang who sought the elixir of life with 3,000 young men and women. Scenic highlights include the finest view of Haegeumgang, Shipjagul Cave, as well as many peculiar rock formations such as Sajabawi (Lion Rock), Bucheobawi (Buddha Rock), and Chotdaebawi (Candlestick Rock). Additionally, there is Ilwolbong Peak, famous for its fantastic sunrise and moonrise. Sightseeing boats operating around Haegeumgang and its neighboring islands are available from Haegeumgang, Dojangpo, Hakdong, Gujora, Wahyeon, etc. within Geoje-si.
