Jeong's Old House in Mureung-ri, Geochang

Jeong's Old House in Mureung-ri, Geochang was built by Sanjeongjeong Jeong Hyeong-cho, who served as Jangsarang and was the great-great-grandson of Jeong Eung-du, a judge of Jangyewon. The current building was renovated in 1924. The building consists of an anchae (main building), sarangchae (men's quarters), and daemunchae (gate building). The inner sarangchae has been demolished, leaving a partially altered structure. The buildings are arranged with a high stylobate on the sloping site, placing the anchae on the higher inner part of the land and the sarangchae on the lower outer part. The anchae features a rare 'ㄷ-shaped' floor plan in the southern region of Korea, with a three-beam structure, a gable roof, and single eaves. It has a '一-shaped' floor plan with four front bays and two side bays, with both end side bays protruding forward to create a 'ㄷ-shaped' floor plan. The sarangchae has a three-beam structure with ikgong (bracket sets), a 'ㄱ-shaped' floor plan, a hip-and-gable roof on the front, and a gable roof on the side. The protruding daecheong (main hall) is in the form of a numaru (raised wooden floor), with an open lower part and a wooden floor surrounding the exterior of the upper part, equipped with a balustrade. The sarangchae is named Sanjeongjeong after the owner's pen name, and although there are slight modifications, it well preserves the architectural techniques of the 18th century. The gate is a three-bay front gate with a gable roof and a raised central gate, with a room and a storage space on each side of the gate. The building must be accessed via high stairs, always requiring one to look up from below, fully expressing the authoritative dignity of a noble family. It is currently inhabited and maintained by descendants.
