Banghyeongbun Tomb in Gujeong-dong, Gyeongju

This is the only square-shaped tomb (banghyeongbun) from the Unified Silla period, providing valuable archaeological data on the lineage of similar-style tombs from the Goryeo period. Located on flat land at the southern end of Daedeoksan Mountain, about 9 km from downtown Gyeongju, it is called 'Banghyeongbun' due to its square shape. The tomb has a passageway to the south and a stone chamber with double-leaf stone doors. The burial mound measures 9 meters on each side and is 2.7 meters high. Inside, to the west of the chamber, there is a stone support that once held the coffin and the deceased. The lower outer edge is surrounded by trimmed protective stones (hoseok), and the Twelve Zodiac Deities (sibijisin) are carved according to the directions. Stone pillars at the corners feature relief carvings of warrior figures and lion statues, which have been relocated and displayed at the Gyeongju National Museum. Although the identity of the buried person is unknown, this square tomb from the Unified Silla period is unique.
