Tomb of King Ilseong of Silla, Gyeongju

경상북도 경주시 탑동 산23

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located on a slightly sloping western area of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, the Tomb of King Ilseong is the burial site of King Ilseong (r. 134–154), the 7th monarch of the Silla Dynasty. The burial mound is 7 meters high and 10 meters in diameter, with a stone retaining wall built at its base.

In front of the mound, there is a stone alignment that appears to be a protective stone barrier made of natural stones, and similar stones seem to have been placed around the mound as well. The stone statue on the middle tier was installed in a later period, and behind it, there is a low, single-tier stone retaining wall made of long stones, which appears to have been built when the statue was placed. The stone retaining wall at the base is made of rubble stone, which also seems to have been modified in later times. This is a large-scale tomb of considerable size, indicating that it is not the grave of an ordinary commoner. However, there are no records regarding King Ilseong's burial site, so it is only presumed based on oral tradition.
