Gyeongju Janghang-ri West Five-Story Stone Pagoda

Janghang-ri Temple Site is a temple site located east of Tohamsan Mountain in Janghang-ri, Munmudaewang-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The exact name of the temple is unknown, so it is called Janghang-ri Temple Site after the village name of Janghang-ri. There were east and west pagodas centered on the main hall site, but after they were collapsed by grave robbers, only the west pagoda, which could be restored, was newly restored in 1932. It is a five-story stone pagoda with a height of 9m, a large-scale stone pagoda showing typical characteristics of Silla stone pagoda style. It has a double base platform, and only the base part of the finial remains. The lower base platform is made relatively wide, giving a sense of stability. On the four sides of the first-story body stone, two doors decorated with goblin-shaped iron rings are carved, and a pair of guardian kings are elaborately carved on each side, showing a rare technique. Based on the carving technique, it is evaluated as a work from the 8th century. It is evaluated as a masterpiece showing a new style of stone pagoda from the early 8th century due to its beautiful overall proportions and excellent carving technique, and it is a valuable resource for the study of Silla stone pagodas.
