Gyeongju Jaemaejeong

Located between the site of Heungryunsa Temple and the site of Wolseong Palace in Gyeongju, Jaemaejeong is a well that was situated on the site of the home of Kim Yushin, a renowned general of the Silla Kingdom. It was built by stacking granite blocks like bricks, and this area is presumed to have been the location of General Kim Yushin's residence.

A legend tells that when General Kim Yushin returned from a long period on the battlefield and had to leave again for war, he passed by his house without seeing his family, drew water from the well, drank it while on horseback, and remarked, 'The taste of our home's water is just as it was in the old days,' before departing. In a 1993 excavation, an area of 70 meters in all directions around Jaemaejeong was excavated. The well is 5.7 meters deep, with the widest part measuring 1.8 meters and a bottom diameter of 1.2 meters, made of stones trimmed like bricks. Next to the well, there is a pavilion housing a stele written by Lee Man-un in 1872, the 9th year of King Gojong's reign of the Joseon Dynasty.
