Tomb of King Hyogong of Gyeongju

This is the tomb of the 52nd king of Silla, King Hyogong (r. 897–912). It is a round earthen mound tomb with a height of 5m and a diameter of 21.2m. At the base of the tomb, a few stones remain that were used to protect it, and these are presumed to be part of a stone border similar to that of the Tomb of King Muyeol. Apart from this, the tomb is very simple with no other markers.

According to the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), when the king died in 912, he was given the posthumous name Hyogong and was buried north of a temple called Sajasa. The Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) records that the king was cremated north of Sajasa and his ashes were buried next to the hill of Gujije, showing a discrepancy in the records. However, since the current location corresponds to the north of the site traditionally considered to be the site of Sajasa Temple, it is not significantly inconsistent. Currently, there is a temple site south of this tomb, which is presumed to be the site of Sajasa Temple.
