Gyewonsa Temple (Yangsan)

경상남도 양산시 중앙우회로 66-64 (중부동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

There are no extant documents that indicate the founding date of Gyewonam Hermitage, a branch temple of Tongdosa Temple. However, according to oral tradition, it was first built during the Gaya period, disappeared during the Joseon period, and was rebuilt in the 1910s.

Regarding the origin of the hermitage, there is a story handed down from ancient times. When looking from Gyewonam Hermitage toward the city of Yangsan, a rock can be seen at the end of a nearby ridge. This rock is called Dakbawi (Chicken Rock). In the past, villagers of Samdong-ri below Gyewonam Hermitage would start their dawn upon hearing the crowing of roosters from atop Dakbawi. Next to Dakbawi is Dakumul (Chicken Well), where the roosters were said to have drunk water. The spring water here is famous for its good taste.
