Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Ssangchungsa is a shrine dedicated to Chungnyeolgong Yi Daewon and Chungjanggoong Jeong Un. Yi Daewon, as the Nokdo Manho in 1587, achieved military exploits against Japanese invaders appearing off the southern coast and died in battle at Sonjukdo. Jeong Un, recommended by Yu Seongryong, assumed the post of Nokdo Manho in 1591 and, during the Imjin War, fought alongside Yi Sunsin as a vanguard commander in battles such as Okpo and Hansando, before dying at Morundae. Ssangchungsa was built in 1605 by Yi Daesang, the son of Yi Daewon, and was designated as a Jeollanam-do Monument in 1990. The shrine is built with a front of 3 kan and a side of 2 kan, and has a hip-and-gable roof. Inside, the spirit tablets of Yi Daewon and Jeong Un are enshrined. Ssangchungsa is located on a high hill along the coast of Bongam-ri, offering views of Sorokdo, Nokdong Port, and Nokdong Port Sea Garden. After touring the area, exiting through the back door leads to the Nokdojin Sacred Site in the form of a park.
