Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

These are a collection of documents housed at Gwanggok Seowon, located in Gwangi-ri, Jisa-myeon, Imsil-gun, and designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Jeollabuk-do. The collection consists of 12 volumes and 10 sheets of books and documents related to Gwanggok Seowon. As materials related to seowon (Confucian academies) are rare, this collection is considered highly valuable. It comprehensively includes various documents pertaining to Gwanggok Seowon, making it an extremely precious resource. The 'Bonoan' and 'Bojikan' are lists of 'Bo' (assistants) assigned to support the seowon's slaves (wonno) and the seowon's caretakers (wonjik) financially, indicating that even in the 19th century, seowon had such assistants assigned. Among the old documents, there are: 1) records showing the process of petitioning the local magistrate to exempt seowon affiliates from miscellaneous labor and receiving approval; 2) documents revealing that commoners were being registered in the seowon's Confucian roster (yuan) and that securing Confucian scholars had financial implications; and 3) documents showing that the magistrate appointed seowon Confucian scholars and issued their appointment letters. These provide excellent material for understanding 18th-19th century society.
