Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gwansungmyo is a shrine dedicated to Guan Yu, a figure from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, who is revered as the god of war. It is also called Juwangmyo or Gwanjemyo. In China, Guan Wangmyo shrines were built from the early Ming Dynasty, and the faith spread to the common people. In Korea, these shrines were established by Ming soldiers during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War and Jeongyu War). The widespread worship of Guan Yu in Korea began when Ming general Jin In placed a statue of Guan Yu at Nammyo in Seoul during the Imjin War.

Gwansungmyo in Jeonju was built in the 32nd year of King Gojong's reign (1895) upon the proposal of Jeolla Province governor Kim Seong-geun and military officer Lee Shin-mun, who was in charge of Namgosanseong Fortress, with support from local leaders.
