Guamjeong Pavilion

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Guamjeong Pavilion is a pavilion built between Gumi Village and Naewolgyo Bridge in Sunchang, along the Seomjin River, National Route 21, and the Seomjin River Bicycle Path. This pavilion stands on a rock called Donam or Baeam. This rock is where Guam Yang Bae (?~1500), a scholar from the early Joseon period from nearby Namwon, spent time fishing with his younger brother Yang Don. Yang Bae cultivated his learning from an early age and had deep knowledge, but after witnessing innocent people suffer unjustly due to the two major literati purges, the Muo Sahwa and Gapja Sahwa, he turned his back on the court and came down here with his brother, living in seclusion in nature and forgetting the world. Later, in 1901, to commemorate Yang Bae's spirit, a pavilion with a paljak (hip-and-gable) roof, measuring 3 kan (bays) in front and 2 kan on the sides, was built here, which is the current Guamjeong Pavilion. In 1990, it was recognized for its value and designated as Cultural Heritage Material of Jeollabuk-do. Nearby Gumi Village is a clan village of the Namwon Yang family, including the Namwon Yang family head house. Additionally, the surrounding area includes Yonggwolsan Natural Recreation Forest, allowing for combined sightseeing.
