Guyangseowon Confucian Academy

Guyangseowon was first established in 1914 with a shrine dedicated to Baek-san Byeon Gyeong-hoe and Bong-eun Byeon Geuk-tae, named Sedeoksa. In 1924, descendants built a memorial hall, lecture hall, and study rooms, and it was elevated to Guyangisa with the support of local Confucian scholars. In 1984, descendant Byeon Gyo-woo personally funded an expansion, constructing a memorial hall, ritual offering house, east and west study halls, three gates, a gate pavilion, and other auxiliary buildings. It was later promoted to a seowon (Confucian academy), enshrining Dae-eun Byeon An-yeol as the main tablet, with Byeon Gyeong-hoe and Byeon Geuk-tae as accompanying tablets, continuing to this day. Buildings include the shrine Sungjeolsa, the main hall Yeomsudang, east and west study halls, inner three gates, and outer three gates. Dae-eun Byeon An-yeol suppressed the Red Turban invasions at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, and in 1380, as Dochechalsa (commander), he achieved great victories against Japanese pirates in areas such as Unbong and Inwol. Later, resisting the new dynasty at the end of Goryeo, he died in 1390 in Hanyang, his place of exile.
