Guksu Rock (Ulleungdo, Dokdo Global Geopark)

경상북도 울릉군 울릉읍 도동리

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Guksu Rock is a massive rock formation created about 1.57 million years ago by the eruption of trachytic lava, reaching approximately 30 meters in height and 300 meters in length. Its walls feature numerous columnar joints that form long bands resembling strands of noodles. Columnar joints are cracks that form when hot lava rapidly cools upon contact with air or water, causing the lava to contract and split into angular pillar shapes. According to legend, King Uhaewang of Usanguk, grieving the death of his beloved queen (Pungminyeo), set up a folding screen at Guksu Rock (Bipasan) and held a 100-day memorial rite, ordering twelve maids to play the bipa (a traditional string instrument) every day.
