Geumsan Church

This is a hanok (traditional Korean house) church built in 1908 by missionary Lews Boyd Tate of the Jeonju branch. According to the records of the Presbyterian Church of Korea, the first church was built with five kan (a unit of measurement for building space) in 1905, but it was moved to its current location and rebuilt in 1908. Currently, next to Geumsan Church, a new church main hall and a missionary residence were built in 1988. The building has five kan in the north-south direction, with an additional two kan attached to the east, forming an inverted L-shape.

The interior consists of a single open space, with a pulpit installed at the junction of the five kan in the north-south direction and the two kan in the east direction. The seating was separated into men's seats to the south and women's seats to the east. This is a unique form found in early Korean church architecture, intended to solve the significant issue of gender segregation in traditional Korean society by constructing an L-shaped building that allowed men and women to worship separately. This church, which harmoniously combines traditional Korean architectural style with features of Western churches, is an important building for examining the process of indigenization of early church architecture in Korea. The preservation condition of each structure is good, and it has been designated and preserved as a cultural property.
