Geumwonsan

Geumwonsan (1,352.5m) was originally called Black Mountain because it is located west of the old Gohyeon and appears black, or the name is said to originate from a legend that a golden monkey living on this mountain was captured and imprisoned in a rock called Wonam. Geumwonsan is situated on the ridge of the Baekdudaegan, which continues from the Namdeogyusan range, and if you follow the ridge stretching southeast, you will meet Gibaeksan. Geumwonsan has many large and small ponds and pools, including Yuancheong Waterfall, Jaun Waterfall, and Hansudong Valley, as well as many cultural relics such as a rock-carved Buddha. Near Yunancheong Waterfall, Geumwonsan Natural Recreation Forest has been developed, and the hiking trails are not steep and the mountain paths are gentle, making it a good mountain for family hikes. Geumwonsan Ecological Arboretum, located in the highest area in Korea, was established for the collection, preservation, research, and exhibition of rare plants (over 1,500 species). It features various themed gardens such as a rhododendron garden, rock garden, Korean fir conservation garden, and hydrangea garden, as well as a forest experience education center and visitor center, and a deck road for convenient observation of the natural landscape. Geumwonsan Natural Recreation Forest is equipped with accommodation facilities such as forest houses, a forest culture recreation center, and a forest training center, as well as various convenience facilities including a campsite, outdoor rest area, performance hall, observation deck, shelter, restrooms, and showers. It also provides various forest culture and recreation services such as forest interpretation programs, forest concerts, and an ice festival.
