Why travelers stop here
Geumhoji is a large reservoir located in Yongari, Geumsan-myeon, about 400 meters from the Geumsan-myeon Office, covering a total area of 204,937㎡. According to legend, a yellow dragon and a blue dragon (or black dragon) were fiercely fighting in the sky. A warrior shouted for them to stop, and when the blue dragon looked down in surprise, the yellow dragon stabbed its neck with a dagger. As the blue dragon fell to the ground and thrashed its tail, a large pond was suddenly formed. This is Geumhoji, which is said to always have clear and blue water, resembling the blue dragon. It is said that when a person dies and goes to the afterlife, the King of Hell asks, 'Have you seen Geumhoji?' If the answer is no, the person is punished for being lazy. The reservoir is so famous that it is known even in the afterlife, making the dragon legend seem natural. Geumhoji has a circumference of about 5 km and is highly curved, so the entire reservoir cannot be seen at once. Although the exact time of its creation is unknown, it is estimated to have formed naturally during the Silla Dynasty.
