Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
Formed from tuff created by volcanic ash that erupted during a violent volcanic explosion 70 million years ago (the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era), which flowed down slopes, accumulated to a thickness of over 500 meters, and hardened. As the volcanic ash cooled rapidly, its volume decreased, creating vertical cracks. Over time, water, wind, and plants eroded and broke down the rock along these cracks, resulting in the mysterious appearance seen today.

<Source: National Geopark>
