Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in a village along the foot of Chukryeong Mountain on the way to Josan Reservoir, this early Joseon Confucian academy is situated within Nosansa Shrine, the shrine of the Gwangsan Kim clan. Gimgi Seo, a native of Gwangsan, had the courtesy name Sigeon and the pen name Donmokjae. He was a nephew of Maesan Gim Seok-won, who served as Seonggyungwan Jikgang and rose to Tongjeong Daebu. Known for his deep filial piety, in 1508 he was appointed as Gwangneung Chambong by King Jungjong and received encouragement. Later, he studied under Jo Gwang-jo and debated with his brother-in-law Yang Paeng-son, among others. In 1519 (the 14th year of King Jungjong's reign), he became implicated in the Gimyo Literati Purge, in which Jo Gwang-jo and many new Confucian scholars were purged. He then retreated to Sangpyeong-ri and secluded himself. Deeply devoted to Jo Gwang-jo's scholarship, he established Gimgi Seo Ganghakdang to focus on educating future generations.

Originally, a Buddhist hall of Jeonbulsa Temple stood on this site. The building is estimated to have been constructed in 1548 (the 3rd year of King Myeongjong's reign). It is a single-story, eight-ridged tiled-roof structure with a front of 5 kan and a side of 2 kan. The interior consists of a central hall with a wooden floor (daemaru) of 2 kan, a left side room of 2 kan, and a right side room of 1 kan, reflecting the simple public architecture of the early Joseon period. It is managed by the Gwangsan Kim clan.
