Why travelers stop here
Kim Seobang's Dakgalbi is a famous restaurant specializing in mul dakgalbi (water dakgalbi), a local dish of Taebaek. Unlike Chuncheon-style dakgalbi, which is seasoned chicken grilled on a hot plate, this place specializes in Taebaek-style dakgalbi, where chicken and various vegetables are boiled in broth. This boiling method originated in Taebaek, where, during the heyday of the coal mining industry, miners would eat this dish to relieve the day's fatigue and soothe their nostalgia. The tradition of enjoying the spicy and savory broth and chewy dakgalbi became a local specialty of Taebaek. In Taebaek, restaurants serving this type of dakgalbi are mainly clustered around Hwangji Pond, and among them, Kim Seobang's Dakgalbi is particularly famous. Located near the entrance of Hwangji Pond, this restaurant has been run by three generations. The exterior is an old building, but the interior is quite spacious and comfortable. Kim Seobang's Dakgalbi is known for capturing the taste of Taebaek-style dakgalbi well, with the owner's homemade seasoning and broth being highly acclaimed. The ingredients are simple—mul dakgalbi and add-ons—but the portions are generous and the flavor is excellent. Vegetables used in mul dakgalbi include perilla leaves, napa cabbage, and crown daisy, with the fragrant crown daisy particularly complementing the chicken. After finishing the mul dakgalbi, you can also make fried rice by adding rice to the remaining broth. After the meal, you can take a walk around Hwangji Pond and enjoy the cozy charm of Taebaek.
