Tomb of Queen Heo Hwang-ok, King Suro's Consort

The Tomb of Queen Heo Hwang-ok, King Suro's Consort in Gimhae is the burial site of Heo Hwang-ok, the queen of King Suro, the founder of Geumgwan Gaya. Heo Hwang-ok was originally a princess from the kingdom of Ayuta in India. It is said that she received a heavenly command, boarded a ship at the age of 16, crossed the sea, and became the wife of King Suro. Unlike the Tomb of King Suro, this tomb is uniquely built on a hill rather than flat land. Nearby is the Gimhae Gusan-dong Ancient Tombs, which feature stone chamber tombs with a corridor structure.

At the entrance to the queen's tomb, there is the main gate called Gunam-mun and a red gate (hongsalmun) erected in front of the tomb. On the right side of the path to the tomb stands Sungbojae, a building for preparing ancestral rites, and in front of the queen's tomb is a tombstone. The Pasa Stone Pagoda below the queen's tomb is said, according to the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), to have been brought on the ship to calm the waves when crossing to the Gaya Kingdom. Every spring and autumn, ancestral rites are held together with the Tomb of King Suro at the Sungseonjeon ritual. Additionally, on the 15th day of the 9th lunar month each year, the Hwanghureung Heongong Darye (tea-offering ceremony to Queen Heo Hwang-ok) is hosted by the Gimhae Cultural Center.
