Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Heo Jun Festival is held every year in the second week of October in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, where Heo Jun was born and wrote the Dongui Bogam, to commemorate his spirit of caring for the people and the greatest medical book in the East, the Dongui Bogam. Heo Jun is a revered doctor representing Korean traditional medicine. As the best physician of the Joseon Dynasty, he completed the 25-volume, 25-book Dongui Bogam in the 2nd year of King Gwanghaegun's reign (1610), after 14 years of referencing his extensive experience and about 500 royal medical texts. The Dongui Bogam, a representative Korean medical book completed after 15 years of arduous effort, was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2009. The Heo Jun Festival first began in 1999 around the Heogabawi area where the Dongui Bogam was written. In 2023, the festival introduced a new concept and diverse programs reflecting its identity, and moved to Seoul Botanic Park to introduce Heo Jun and Gangseo to more people and ensure everyone can safely enjoy the festival.
