Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Nojeokbong is a large rock peak on Yudalsan Mountain in Mokpo-si. This peak is famous for being used by Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the Imjin War to defeat the enemy, highlighting his psychological warfare utilizing the terrain. To overcome military disadvantages during the Imjin War, he covered the rock with thatch, making it look like a stack of military provisions (nojeok), giving the illusion of a large stockpile of grain. Additionally, he had locals wear military uniforms and continuously circle around Nojeokbong to feign a large army, and spread white clay powder in the Yeongsan River to make the water flowing into the sea appear like rice-washing water, deceiving the Japanese forces into thinking the Korean army was well-supplied, leading the Japanese commander to retreat. The tactic of circling Nojeokbong later evolved into the cultural art of Ganggangsullae, according to legend. When viewed from a different angle, Nojeokbong resembles a human face. It is also believed that receiving the energy of Nojeokbong is good for health, making it popular among visitors who come to make wishes, emerging as a new tourist attraction.
