Dangjin Pilgyeongsa

충청남도 당진시 송악읍 상록수길 97

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Dangjin Pilgyeongsa is the preserved home of writer Shim Hoon near Seohae Bridge in Songak-eup. The building consists of 5 front bays and 2 side bays, and the Sangnoksu Culture Center stands directly in front of it. Pilgyeongsa means 'to cultivate a field with a brush.' Shim Hoon left his life in Seoul around 1933 and moved to Dangjin where his father lived, writing works such as 'Eternal Smile' and 'Jiknyeoseong.' In 1934, he became independent and designed and built this house himself, which is Pilgyeongsa. In 1935, Shim Hoon wrote his representative rural novel 'Sangnoksu' in this house. Pilgyeongsa was once managed by his grandnephew, the late Shim Jae-young, and after being donated to Dangjin City, it has been managed by the county. The monument in the yard inscribed with Shim Hoon's poem 'That Day Will Come' was erected by the Korean Writers Association in 1996. Dangjin Pilgyeongsa can be visited via Sangnoksu-gil from National Route 38 or Local Route 619, and is close to Songak IC on the West Coast Expressway. Nearby attractions include Seohae Bridge, Haengdam Island, and Songaksan Mountain.
