Baekbeom Square (Statue of Baekbeom Kim Gu)

Baekbeom Square is located halfway up Namsan Park in Hoehyeon-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. Within the park stands a statue of Baekbeom Kim Gu, an independence activist, educator, and politician. The Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Association established the statue in August 1969 within Baekbeom Square to honor his patriotic spirit in the anti-Japanese national salvation movement and his efforts to establish a unified nation. Two months after his assassination, the Kim Gu Statue Construction Promotion Committee was formed, initiating discussions for the statue. The site was chosen as Namsan Park, which was the location of the Japanese colonial-era Joseon Shrine. The statue, based on a plaster bust made during his lifetime with donations from domestic and international sources, was sculpted by Kim Gyeong-seung and Min Bok-jin, standing 10 meters tall. Under the leadership of the Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Association, formed in 1960, the statue's groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 8, 1969, and the unveiling ceremony took place on August 23, his birthday. In front of the statue, a wide lawn has been created, and a path leads up to Namsan. Additionally, the park features an equestrian statue of General Kim Yu-sin, who unified the Three Kingdoms, and a statue of Yi Si-yeong.
