Livingston Bridge

Livingston Bridge connects Deoksan-ri to Hapgang-ri in Inje-eup. It is a 150m long, 3.6m wide I-beam bridge with red-painted wooden railings, bearing a name that carries a poignant story from the Korean War.

During the Korean War in 1951, amid the Chinese Communist Forces' May general offensive, Lieutenant Livingston, who participated in the Inje area battle as a UN force member, was ambushed by enemy forces at a point 2km north of Inje on June 10 and pushed back to Deoksan-ri. To make matters worse, heavy rain caused the river to swell, leaving no way to block enemy gunfire, resulting in the deaths of most soldiers, including Lieutenant Livingston. On his deathbed, Lieutenant Livingston lamented that the lack of a bridge over the river had led to this tragedy and left a will requesting that a bridge be built here. After the Korean War ended, his widow visited Korea and donated funds for the bridge construction in accordance with her husband's wishes, and on December 4, 1957, Livingston Bridge was completed.
