Maisan Mountain Ritual

전북특별자치도 진안군 마령면

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Maisan Mountain is a site where, during the Silla period, a ritual site was established to honor the nation's famous mountains and rivers, and successive dynasties continued this tradition by holding mountain god rituals. In particular, it is said that when King Taejong of Joseon traveled south, he sent an official to perform a ritual and bestowed the name 'Maisan' (Horse Ear Mountain). The Maisan Mountain Ritual was conducted in spring and autumn under the supervision of Jinan County, but after the Japanese colonial period, the state-led mountain god ritual ceased.

After liberation, the Maisan Mountain Ritual was not held for a time due to the chaotic domestic situation, but it was revived in 1984 as part of Jinan County Citizens' Day events. On October 11, the day before Citizens' Day, a mountain god ritual is held at the Maisan Altar, set up at Eunsusa Temple on Maisan Mountain, by the Maisan Ritual Committee, praying for national peace, the well-being of the people, and a bountiful harvest. Although this tradition has been restored only recently, the Maisan Mountain Ritual continues a tradition dating back to the Three Kingdoms period.
