Mangudang Park

Located along the Geumho River, the park is named after the pen name of General Gwak Jae-woo, who raised a righteous army and achieved great military feats during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598). The park was created to honor the achievements of General Gwak Jae-woo, also known as the 'Red-Clad General,' who was the first to raise a righteous army nationwide during the Imjin War, defeating the Japanese invaders, and who served as the Defense Commander of Gyeongsang Province and the Governor of Hamgyeong Province.

Inside Mangudang Park, the Mangudang Memorial Hall preserves the relics of Gwak Jae-woo. At the highest point of the hill overlooking the Geumho River, a statue of the Red-Clad General is erected in a posture of riding a horse and leading troops. The pedestal of the statue bears the Chinese character inscription 'Statue of the Red-Clad General Gwak Jae-woo' written by former President Park Chung-hee. Along the roadside, the Imran Hoguk Yeongnam Chunguidan (Righteous Army Memorial) displays detailed information about the righteous army. On the park lawn, there is an art monument by Soheon Kim Man-ho (1908–1992), one of the top ten modern Korean calligraphers. Additionally, the Joyang Hall, a cradle of modern education built by Seo Sang-il and a representative historic site of the Daegu independence movement, has been relocated and restored here. Next to the hall stands the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Anti-Japanese Independence Movement Memorial Tower, built at a height of 45 meters to symbolize the liberation of 1945. The tower is inscribed with the names of 1,796 individuals from Daegu and Gyeongbuk who were awarded national honors for their contributions to the anti-Japanese independence movement over the 50 years from 1895 to the liberation in 1945. The Imran Hoguk Yeongnam Chunguidan was established in 1998 within Mangudang Park by Dr. Gwak Ye-sun and other descendants of the Yeongnam righteous army, who united their efforts. It enshrines the spirit tablets of 315 Yeongnam righteous army members, including Gwak Jae-woo, Kim Myeon, Seo Sa-won, Jeong Se-ah, and Jeong Dae-im. Since 2011, a memorial rite has been held annually on June 1 to commemorate 'Righteous Army Day,' which is the solar calendar equivalent of the lunar date April 22 when General Gwak Jae-woo first raised a righteous army during the Imjin War.
