Mangisanseong Fortress

경기도 안성시 일죽면

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Mangisanseong Fortress is a mountain fortress built during the Three Kingdoms period, constructed along a low ridge north of the 472m-high peak of Mt. Mangisan. It is a strategic military location overlooking the fields of Samseong-myeon, Eumseong-gun to the south and the Jincheon-gun area in the distance. An inner fortress was built with earth around the mountain peak, and an outer fortress was built with stone along the ridge for about 2km. Inside the inner fortress, a square beacon tower was erected. This beacon is connected to the beacons of Jukseon Geonjisan, Jincheon Soeulsan, and Eumseong Gayeopsan.

Mangisanseong Fortress is recorded in the Sejong Sillok Jiriji and the Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam, and it is an important Three Kingdoms period site, rare for a mountain fortress in that it consists of both an inner and outer fortress. It is presumed to be a Goguryeo fortress, but various artifacts from the late Bronze Age through the Baekje, Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon periods have been excavated within the fortress. Notably, a roof tile from 963 was excavated, providing important material for the study of roof tiles from the late Unified Silla and early Goryeo periods.
