Maehak Falls

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A waterfall located in Samun-ri, Suanbo-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, it is a waterfall that falls vertically and refreshingly from a granite cliff. It is on the northern slope of Sinseonbong Peak right next to the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range, and along with Suryong Falls in Noeun-myeon and Palbong Falls in Salmi-myeon, it is one of the few waterfalls in Chungju-si. The Sinseonbong area is a granite mountain region where horizontal sheet joints are well developed, allowing observation of layered rock formations in many places. Maehak Falls is formed where vertical joints combine with the rock, creating a stream of water on the cliff face in the valley, and the water cascading over the layered rocks harmonizes with the surrounding mountain scenery to create a spectacular view. Around the hiking trail leading to the waterfall, talus fragments detached from the granite cover the slopes, with pine trees and deciduous trees growing among them. Following the road toward Mireuk-ri, Suanbo-myeon, and turning right at Moeak-dong, Samun-ri, leads to the path to the waterfall. The hiking trail from Maehak Falls to Sinseonbong Peak, Mayeokbong Peak, and the 3rd Gate of Joryeong is a popular destination. The actual signboard marks it as Sinseon Falls. Caution is needed around the waterfall due to slippery wet rocks.
