Mugaksa Temple

Located on Yeouisan Mountain in Seo-gu, Gwangju, Mugaksa Temple is a urban practice temple and cultural space, serving as the Yeouijeongto (Pure Land) that leads not only Gwangju but also Honam Buddhism. Mugaksa Temple was founded in 1971 by the great monk Gusan of Songgwangsa Temple, gathering the strength of local Buddhists, and has played a significant role as a spiritual refuge for the patriotic spirit and Buddhist practice of the soldiers of Sangmudae (Combat Training Command). When Sangmudae, which was a training area for soldiers until the early 1990s, moved to Jangseong area, Mugaksa Temple gained attention as an urban practice temple, and since the appointment of Monk Cheonghak in 2007, it has been undergoing full-scale development. Currently, Mugaksa Temple operates day-temple stays and experiential temple stays, attracting continuous visits from citizens.
