Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

It was built in the 28th year of King Sukjong (1702) to honor Chugye Yun Hyo-son (1431–1503), a civil official of the Joseon Dynasty during the reign of King Seongjong. Yun Hyo-son compiled the Gyeongguk Daejeon, Orye Uiju, and Seongjong Sillok, and served as Governor of Gyeongsang Province, Mayor of Hanseong, Grand Censor, Vice-Director of Seonggyungwan, and Left and Right State Councilors. Around 1740, Byeoksong Yun Wi, the founding ancestor of the Jungbang-ri area of Gurye-gun, was additionally enshrined as the main tablet. Later, Choe Yeon, Yi Gyeong-seok, and Choe Eon-su were also enshrined, making a total of five tablets. In the 2nd year of King Gojong (1865), it was abolished due to the decree abolishing private Confucian academies. It was rebuilt in 1985 to enshrine Yun Hyo-son, and from 1994, Yun Wi and Yi Gyeong-seok were enshrined together. Within the academy grounds, there are buildings such as the shrine (Modeoksa), Dongjae (east dormitory), Seojae (west dormitory), Oesammun (Gyeongangmun), and Naesammun (Geoinmun). Behind the shrine, on a hill, there is a hackberry tree designated as a protected tree. As of 2011, this old tree is estimated to be about 500 years old, with a height of 20m and a trunk circumference of 4.8m, and its shape is grand and beautiful.
